You’d think that James Cameron would be less than happy with Avengers: Endgame dethroning his own movie Avatar after a decade-long reign as the highest-grossing movie ever.

Yet his feelings are very much on the contrary, as the director has admitted that seeing the Marvel blockbuster break the record has made him hopeful.

“It gives me a lot of hope,” Cameron told Deadline. “Avengers: Endgame is demonstrable proof that people will still go to movie theaters.

“The thing that scared me most about making Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 was that the market might have shifted so much that it simply was no longer possible to get people that excited about going and sitting in a dark room with a bunch of strangers to watch something.”

Well, it seems that his fears were overblown.

When it was revealed that the Marvel movie had beaten his own, Cameron posted: “I see you, Marvel. Congratulations to Avengers Endgame on becoming the new box-office king. Jim Cameron.”
