Warner Bros has released the first trailer for upcoming thriller The Good Liar, based on the novel by Nicholas Searle.
The movie stars Ian McKellen as seasoned con artist Roy Courtnay who thinks he’s found his perfect target in Helen Mirren’s wealthy widow Betty McLeish after he meets her online. “You bloody bet I’m going to take it all,” he says of her vast fortune.
Unfortunately for him, he starts to find himself caring for her, turning his simple scheme into the most dangerous tightrope walk of his life. As ever when it comes to cons, nothing is quite what it seems.
The movie is directed by Beauty and the Beast‘s Bill Condon, marking his fourth time working with McKellen.
It could well be that The Good Liar will find itself in awards contention as Condon and McKellen’s first movie together, 1998’s Gods and Monsters, saw McKellen land his first-ever Oscar nomination and Condon won best adapted screenplay.
As well as Cats later this year, McKellen recently announced that his one-man show – Ian McKellen on Stage with Tolkien, Shakespeare, Others and You – would be returning to the West End for a further 80 shows.
The West End run opens on September 20, 2019 and ends on January 5, 2020. Tickets are available to buy now, with performances taking place every day except Monday.
The Good Liar is released in cinemas on November 15.
