Investing a couple of hundred quid to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch is one of the best decisions you can make. Seriously.

The portable, hybrid handheld and home TV console offers a gaming experience that’s pretty much perfect – whether that’s on the go, or sneaking in a few levels at home.

If you travel or commute regularly, if you often sit around not really doing much, if you are having a party and need some fun entertainment, if you play video games at all… we expect you’ll love the Switch.

So, it’s for pretty much everyone, right?

As always, Nintendo has created a massive list of games for you to jump into immediately. Classic characters make their way into some incredibly fun and addictive titles, while new franchises have blossomed since the console’s release.

Super Mario Party (Nintendo Switch)

It is hard to box Super Mario Party into a particular genre – board-game-’em-up? – but it is a hell of a lot of fun to play. It should be fairly obvious that this game’s best enjoyed with friends and family joining in – so grab some buddies and let the chaos unfold.

A series of challenges and wacky games will force you to betray all honourable notions as you smash the buttons on the Joy-Con to achieve victory. This game is hectic, mad and a ton of fun.

  • Plenty to do in-game
  • Super-competitive fun
  • You can do a cute little high-five to boost morale after every mini-game

  • Friends and family essential

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo Switch)

Mario Kart can make or break any relationship/friendship, depending on how ruthless your opponents are with the dreaded blue shell. Luckily, the fun never stops with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, even if victory is snatched from your hands in the dying seconds.

Mario Kart 8 ports perfectly over from the Wii U, with the controls feeling tight on the Joy-Cons, and everything will feel immediately familiar to you if you have ever played another Mario Kart game.

The Deluxe version will come packed with all the DLC maps and characters, so you can blast your way through every race and claim victory without forking out for extra content.

An absolute blast to play with friends or at a party, just remain calm if you and your friend are locked in an epic battle to dodge each other’s banana skins.

  • Playable with friends or alone
  • The most complete Mario Kart game
  • New Nintendo characters to enjoy

  • That damned Rainbow Road

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo Switch)

Fresh off the production line, Super Mario Bros U Deluxe came out at the start of 2019, and has received glowing reviews from Mario fans across the board.

This is a super fun experience that works perfectly as the ultimate time-consuming, portable, on-the-go video game.

A few – not many – new characters, as well as several new powers and an ever-increasing challenge arc, make this an excellent pick for your Switch.

You also get the added New Super Luigi U, which is essentially a Hard-Mode switch for if you want a brutal, challenging Mario experience in which you force Luigi into an endless hell of death and failure. Poor Luigi.

  • We are happy to report Blue Toad made it into the game
  • New Super Luigi U is gruelling but rewarding
  • Accessible to newcomers

  • Not very many playable characters
  • Might be too “easy” for long-time Mario fans

Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch)

When Call of Duty meets paintball, you get the cutesy classic Splatoon 2, an obscenely fun shooter that will take you by surprise.

Combining the best parts of some of the most popular games available, Splatoon 2 sees you take control of little characters who wield anything from paintball guns to mortars and giant paint rollers.

The aim of the game is to gain enemy eliminations and paint the map in your colour, powering up your Special as you go to unleash havoc on your opponents.

Swimming through sections of the map painted in your colour will power you up, make you move faster and reload your gun – this game is seriously a blast.

A competitive shooter with barrels of fun, plenty of unlocks and gorgeous artwork make Splatoon 2 a must-have.

  • Colourful, competitive and fun to play
  • Incredible amount of free extra content
  • Messy! We like messy

  • Needs more game modes
  • Has quite a steep learning curve

Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo Switch)

Of course a Mario-centric game was going to be on the list. This is Nintendo, guys… come on. But Super Mario Odyssey is here on its own merits. It’s one of the best games available right now – and a ton of fun to play.

If you’re a Nintendo newbie with little experience of Mario games, you will still love this excellent platforming adventure – simply because it’s so charmingly weird.

A giant, open-world experience is at your fingertips, letting you explore dozens of brilliant levels at your leisure. If you ever played Mario 64 or Mario Sunshine, you will feel right at home.

Challenging, without straying into frustrating, Odyssey gives you that warm, fuzzy glow of achievement every single time you figure out a way to collect a star.

This is also a huge game that has lots to do, consuming your entire life for several dozen hours. But you’ll have a blast the entire time.

  • Seriously big, open-world game
  • Challenging, but not frustrating
  • The epitome of the perfect Nintendo Switch game

  • Requires A LOT of game time

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch)

Widely considered as one of the best games ever created, Breath of the Wild captured the hearts of all gamers, from hardcore Zelda fans to casual pick-up-players. They are correct – it *is* one of the best games ever made.

The game’s beautifully realised on screen, with a giant, open world jam-packed full of fun, and interesting tasks that you can easily sink hundreds of hours into.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is excellent if you’re keen to lose yourself in an immersive world full of things to see and do.

Exploration and adventure are the key themes for Breath of the Wild, so pick this up and prepare to lose your social life.

You can literally go anywhere in the map at any time and do whatever you want, giving you total freedom to explore this delightful title at your own pace.

  • Everything you want from a portable game
  • One of the best Zelda games ever made

  • Quite a big game world – some would say too big
  • Prepare to be humbled – this game is tricky

Super Smash Bros – Ultimate (Nintendo Switch)

The ultimate (pardon the pun) hero fighter game has finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch. One of the most addictive and fun titles you can pick up, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is huge fun – and we love it.

The only problem is finding the time to unlock all the characters and actually get some game time with them, because you’re going to have to grind through more than 70 fights to unlock them all.

Fight with your favourite Nintendo heroes in battles with up to 8 players battles that are fast, beautifully chaotic and loads of fun.

This game is an absolute joy to play – even if you secretly don’t actually have any idea what is going on, or why Ganondorf is clapping you around the map with shocking ease.

  • Excellent social game to play with friends
  • SOOOOO many heroes
  • The perfect fighting game

  • Ganondorf is TOO MUCH
