Warner Bros’ Suicide Squad sequel/reboot The Suicide Squad has assembled quite the cast under new writer and director James Gunn, but there’s no word yet on which characters each of the new cast members are playing.
New photos from the set have now started circulating online (via JustJared) that show the new cast members in some very colourful ’80s-esque costumes – a far cry from the understated looks in the first film.
But, more exciting than that, comic book fans think they’ve figured out who is playing who from the photos, so let’s have a look at what these sleuths have come up with.
Firefly actor Nathan Fillion is wearing a padded green outfit, with a skull and crossed arms logo on his chest. Some fans think that means he is playing the character Blackguard while others think he’ll be playing joke character Arm Fall-Off Man.
Meanwhile, Mayling Ng is seen in purple body armour with orange skin and a red ponytail, which almost definitely means she’s playing the extraterrestrial villain Mongal.
The Good Place and Pitch Perfect 2 star Flula Borg’s blue and yellow costume is pretty striking, and fans have easily connected him to the character Javelin. Unless Gunn throws a huge curveball our way, we think this one is a dead cert.
Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson is decked out in guns and more Suicide Squad-esque armour, which might make his role harder to pin down. Fans seem to think he’s playing Savant, who is closely affiliated with the Suicide Squad in the comics.

Meanwhile, Sean Gunn is once again decked out in a motion capture suit, meaning he could be playing absolutely anyone – although comic aficionados believe he’ll be playing Weasel.
James Gunn has yet to weigh in on any of the speculation and we probably shouldn’t expect him to for a while, as last month he warned fans not to expect any more info right now.
“In all honesty, I don’t know if we’ll officially release character info for a long long while to come,” he shared. “Right now I’m simply focused on MAKING the greatest movie I can, not promoting it or sharing info about it.”
Alongside the actors named above, The Suicide Squad will also star Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis, as well as newcomers Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, Storm Reid, John Cena, Alice Braga, Taika Waititi and Jennifer Holland.
The Suicide Squad is released in cinemas on August 6, 2021.
