Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director JJ Abrams has confirmed that the film’s storyline won’t be continued in future Star Wars movies.

During an explorative look into the new movie on Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker said that “while the film is introducing new characters”, it “won’t set up a future story” for the current saga.

“It’s a very good ending, and a good ending feels right,” added C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels.

The revelation that Episode 9 will close this chapter of the long-running franchise follows Abram’s comments in which he insisted that the trailers for the film don’t really spoil anything.

“The [trailers] that have come out are scratching the surface of what the movie is,” the director told Entertainment Weekly.

This, of course, hasn’t stopped the fandom from coming up with their own wild theories about what could happen in The Rise of Skywalker, from dark Rey to the potential for Palpatine’s return.

The theory about dark Rey might have some legs, though, as actress Daisy Ridley recently explained why it was fun to play the dark side of her character.

“It’s fun to play someone’s best version, and then the worst,” Daisy told Adoro Cinema (via Comic Book). “It’s an amazing thing to do as an actress, but we can’t do it often.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a release date of Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
