Amazon is really going all-in with The Lord of the Rings licence. Not only has the company announced a super-expensive TV series for its streaming service, but it’s now announced a brand new game as well.
Amazon Game Studios has teamed up with Warframe publisher Athlon Games to work on a free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) game for consoles and PC, although we don’t know which consoles it will be for at the moment.
Details are quite thin on the ground, but the game promises to “give fans around the globe a new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the vast world of Tolkien”.
The game won’t take place at the same time at the TV series, which is going to focus on The Second Age time period of Middle-earth. And that’s all we know so far.
Warner Bros Interactive has been publishing various games based on the works on JRR Tolkien for the past few years, after Electronic Arts released some very good LoTR movie tie-ins and the really good The Battle for Middle-earth II.
Under WBI, we got Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, as well as LEGO LoTR and LEGO The Hobbit, which were unceremoniously de-listed from digital storefronts at the beginning of this year.
We don’t know if Amazon’s deal will affect Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, but you should probably pick them up sooner rather than later anyway.
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series is expected to arrive in 2021 on Amazon Prime.
