SOS! Pierce Brosnan will be drawing inspiration from ABBA once again, as the Mamma Mia! actor has officially signed on for Netflix’s upcoming Eurovision movie.
(Yep, you read that correctly. There’s going to be a Eurovision movie.)
Netflix’s latest project – which is called Eurovision, natch – stars Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as aspiring Icelandic musicians keen for a victory at the legendary song contest.
Ferrell and McAdams will play Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir respectively, while Pierce will take on the role of Erick Erickssong, Lars’ father and “the most handsome man in Iceland”.
The official description for Netflix’s latest title, which is currently in production in the UK and Iceland, promises a real fever dream of cinema – and even hints at some cheesy, classically-Eurovision themes. Think ‘Love Love Peace Peace’.
It reads: “When aspiring musicians Lars and Sigrit are given the opportunity of a lifetime to represent their country at the world’s biggest song competition, they finally have a chance to prove that any dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for.”
Of course, both Pierce and fans alike will be hoping his turn as Erick Erickssong requires as little singing as possible – after all, the actor was himself “relieved” when he realised Sam Carmichael had less singing time in Mamma Mia!‘s sequel.
Reflecting on his reduced responsibilities in last year’s Here We Go Again, Pierce said: “Oh, I was relieved, I was very relieved. I mean, the first one was a massive undertaking – ‘SOS’ is a warhorse of a song.
“And I managed to get through it one way or another.”
