As video game movies go, we think the original Mortal Kombat was decent, but the less said about Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, the better.
More than 20 years after that original big screen outing for the classic video game series, The Conjuring and Aquaman director James Wan is working on a reboot of Mortal Kombat, although he’s only producing.
Simon McQuoid is instead making his directorial debut on the new movie which has been written by Greg Russo, who’s also working on the Resident Evil reboot.
But what else do we know about the big screen return of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade and more? We’re glad you asked, so get ready to FIGHT!
Mortal Kombat movie cast: Who’s in it?
If there’s one reason to be excited about the upcoming reboot, it’s that they’re assembling an incredible cast.
Of course, the movie can’t possibly feature every character that’s been in the video game series to date, but it certainly seems to be including most of the major players that you’d expect, so here’s the cast to date in full:
- Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero
- Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion
- Chin Han as Shang Tsung
- Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
- Mehcad Brooks as Jax
- Tadanobu Asano as Raiden
- Sisi Stringer as Mileena
- Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
- Josh Lawson as Kano
And Lewis Tan has also been cast as an “undisclosed lead character”, so will that be a new character entirely, perhaps as the audience’s point-of-view into the Mortal Kombat world? Or is he playing someone like Johnny Cage and they’re keeping it a secret?
Tan is keeping tight-lipped about his role so far, but he has posted on Twitter about his excitement for the role.
“I have been training for this my entire life, which is why I will not let you down,” he wrote.
“Excited to bring this to life with this special studio and this legendary story, it is truly a childhood dream manifested. Dedicated to my father and mother, those that never doubted me, and those that did. To all the fans, this is for you. Round one…”
Mortal Kombat movie release date: When can we expect it?
If everything goes smoothly, the reboot will be fighting its way into cinemas on March 5, 2021 in the UK and US.
The movie is set to start shooting in South Australia later this year. “I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” Wan said in a statement.
“Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”
Mortal Kombat movie plot: What will it be about?
At this moment in time, we don’t actually know for sure as there hasn’t been an official synopsis released, or even teased.
So we’re going to assume it’ll follow the rough structure of the games and see a group of warriors enter a tournament to save Earth, including the likes of Liu Kang and Sonya Blade, from the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung.
One thing we do know is that the movie won’t hold back on the blood and will feature the game’s iconic fatalities. Phew.
“MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones) You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!!” Russo wrote on Twitter.
Mortal Kombat movie trailer: When will it land?
We wouldn’t expect to see anything until 2020, but we could think of no better place to launch the first footage than at Comic-Con.
For now, just savour the trailer for the original Mortal Kombat movie.
Mortal Kombat is out on March 5, 2021.
