Marvel star Anthony Mackie can boast that he’s Captain America, but it could’ve turned out very differently had his first MCU audition gone to plan.
Sam Wilson actually wasn’t the first Marvel role he went for.
In fact, rather interestingly, it was the Mandarin in Iron Man 3.
Although Ben Kingsley ultimately landed the part of the villain, the higher-ups were so impressed with Mackie’s audition and the star ended up having conversations with director Joe Russo about playing Falcon, according to Men’s Health.
“He has charisma, but he also has the ability to convey integrity in a way that very few actors can,” Russo – who co-directed MCU movies including Captain America: Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame – told the publication.
Mackie added: “Growing up, I’d always loved Falcon, because he was a comic book hero who was black who didn’t have ‘Black’ in the title.
“He stood on his morals. He stood on who he was.”

Elsewhere, a cameo from Mackie as the new Captain America was briefly considered for Spider-Man: Far from Home at one point.
Marvel Studios creative executive Eric Carroll told ComicBook.com: “We briefly talked about bringing in Falcon as Captain America at the end, like maybe once Peter’s arced, and he’s sort of like leading the team, like maybe he calls in a favour.”
