Promising Young Woman, from Killing Eve writer Emerald Fennell, is about to jump to the top of your must-see list for 2020.
Universal has released an excellent first trailer for the all-star revenge thriller that sees Cassie (Carey Mulligan) target a series of men, played by the likes of Adam Brody and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, to show them the error of their ways.
“Every week, I go to a club. I act like I’m too drunk to stand. And every week a nice guy comes over to see if I’m OK,” Cassie explains of what she does.
It’s linked to a mysterious event in her past that saw her potential career as a doctor derailed. Nothing in her life is as it seems, and an unexpected encounter is set to give Cassie a change to right the wrongs of her past.
The thriller is written and directed by Fennell, who took over from Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the showrunner and main writer of Killing Eve in season two. She also played Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown‘s third season.
Promising Young Woman‘s impressive cast also includes Laverne Cox, Connie Britton, Bo Burnham, Jennifer Coolidge, Max Greenfield, Chris Lowell and Molly Shannon, and the thriller is produced by Margot Robbie, among others.
Talking to Empire, Fennell explained that for her cast, she didn’t want to “cast lots of malevolent goblins”.
“I wanted to cast people that we all want to like. When you hear something about somebody you love, you don’t want to believe it. I want to test at every stage our affiliations, our allegiances,” she added.
Promising Young Woman premieres at Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 and will be released in cinemas later in the year.
