But although they may seem worlds apart, Joker‘s executive producer has claimed they’re actually kind of similar.
Although we’re sure Joker won’t be set in space – and we doubt it’ll include a talking raccoon – producer Michael E Uslan has still drawn a parallel between the two films. He’s thrown Deadpool into the mix too, in fact.
Speaking at the CCXP Cologne, Uslan outlined the surprising similarity between Marvel’s Guardians and DC‘s upcoming solo Joker project: they’re similar because they’re both so different.
“I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was different and unique when it came out. I thought Deadpool was different and unique when it came out,” Uslan explained (via Comicbook.com). “This Joker movie is different and unique and it’s unlike any comic book movie you’ve ever seen.”
Apart from those other “different and unique” comic book movies, that is.
Of course, there aren’t many other comparisons that can be drawn from the two films, with Uslan going on to describe Joker as a “low-budget film noir crime drama”, which we’d argue is almost the polar opposite of the Guardians series.
“It’s maybe more like a Martin Scorsese, low-budget film noir crime drama,” he said, “but I have all the faith in the world in Todd [Phillips], the brilliantly talented Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro. It’s an incredible, incredible group of people that’s brought this to life.”
Essentially The Killing Joke in all but name, Tom Phillips’ Joker – led by Joaquin Phoenix –is the Clown Prince of Crime’s origin story, following Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society who eventually transforms into the iconic Batman villain.
Star-Lord’s brother from another mother, basically.
Joker is released in cinemas on October 4.
