This year’s dark superhero movie Brightburn could be getting a sequel.

Tackling the question of what could happen if Superman decided to turn against the human race, this James Gunn-produced horror received mixed reviews upon release – but the ending of the film does set up the idea of an intriguing shared universe.

The filmmaker is currently hard at work on The Suicide Squad for DC – which reboots David Ayer’s underwhelming 2016 take on the group – and is then scheduled to return to his cosmic world of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 straight afterwards.

In other words, Gunn’s a little busy right now, but he has at least assured one Instagram fan that talks are underway for a Brightburn sequel.

“We definitely need @brightburnmovie sequel! Would you be so kind and direct it? @jamesgunn,” one fan commented on his Instagram.

“I think I’m tied up for the next few years with Suicide Squad and then Guardians, but we’re talking about the sequel,” Gunn replied.

For those who’ve seen the new horror movie (and its end credits), Brightburn ends with Michael Rooker’s conspiracy theorist character The Big T ranting about supervillains who live among us, following the main character Brandon’s reign of terror.

He references demonic versions of Aquaman (described as a half-man, half-sea creature who’s wreaking havoc under the water) and Wonder Woman (a witch who strangles her victims with a rope that forces them to tell the truth).

So the seeds have been planted, now we just need to wait for Gunn to finish up on his other commitments.

Brightburn is out in cinemas now.
