Aside from exchanging superhuman punches and kicks with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the upcoming Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, Idris Elba also provided his musical talents to the film.
Elba plays the film’s cyber-genetically enhanced antagonist Brixton, who seeks to gain control of a world-threatening bio-weapon (as bad guys do), causing the unlikely duo of Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham) to team up.
We can only imagine how much energy it must take to keep up with the likes of Johnson and Statham, but that didn’t stop Elba writing a song for his villain in between takes.
After eventually recording the song, he played it to director David Leitch, who liked it so much he decided to put it in the film.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Elba said: “People know that I DJ and I make music and all that, but the hybrid of being able to put something that I’ve made specifically for a movie I’m in is new territory for me.”
Leitch added: “Idris is an artist in so many ways; he’s an incredible actor and also a martial artist and a musician. And when you’re surrounded by artists like that, you want to just take advantage of it and support the creativity and see where it goes.”
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw will be released on August 2, 2019.
