The Premier League season might well be underway, but we are all waiting for the true Football experience, FIFA 20, to arrive on Xbox One, Ps4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
A whole new game for us to get stuck into is just what we need in the winter months, and what better way to start off the new FIFA than a full guide to help you get started in the game’s most popular mode Ultimate Team.
We all know this is where you’ll be spending most of your time on FIFA 20, and you’re going to want to make a good start on your Ultimate Team to take online, because you can bet your bottom dollar other players are going to have a finely-tuned strategy to collect the best players and beat you into the ground.
Whether you’re a first-time player or a veteran looking to make improvements on your team from last year, we’ve compiled the ultimate guide to help you get started on your ultimate team.
FIFA Ultimate Team guide: What is FUT?
Again, if you’re new to FUT, its a game mode in FIFA 20 that lets you build your own squad of your favourite players to take online against other players.
You become the manager of your own Ultimate Team, opening packs, trading cards for cash or other players, building a strong team with chemistry and the correct positioning, managing player fitness and even injuries to make the strongest team possible.
Any player that plays in most major leagues is available, including legends and icons from the past like Pele, Beckham and Sir Bobby Moore, to build your squad, from bronze-level players from the world’s lowest leagues, all the way up to the greatest players in the world like Ronaldo, Messi, and Neymar.
Win games to earn coins to spend on better players and improve your team. It sounds simple, but you’ll be playing against other players from around the world who are all trying to do the exact same thing, so things can quickly get out of hand.
There is an immensely complex and deep market system that you can use to buy and sell players. Footballers in-game have real world value and prices will change drastically depending on their real-life form, so you can play the market to make more money to improve your squad. Think the stock market but for imaginary money and good.
Players will also improve in-game depending on how they are performing in life. Players will be awarded In-Form cards or Man of the Match special cards that improve their stats, their value and their ability to boost your squad.
Pick up coloured cards to give your team a quality bump, or hold on to them to trade in the market for a profit.
FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Guide: Are player packs worth it?
Of course, the most important part of FIFA UT is opening packs and praying to God you get some top-tier players.
You can buy packs with real-world money or with FIFA points, which is an in-game currency you can buy with money. Packs are split into rarities, from bronze all the way up to Mega-Packs filled with rare and high-rated players.
The more packs you open, the higher your chance of securing a top-end player, but they can get pretty pricey.
Players spend a heck of a lot of money on Ultimate Team and while you don’t have to spend money on packs, it helps you build your team faster.
EA came into a bit of hot-water recently as the FUT Packs were scrutinised for appearing as gambling in a game that children can play.
Opening packs is totally random, and you might not get the players you want or hope for in your packs, even if you buy hundreds of pounds worth, so be wary if you start spending a lot.
Our advise is, if you can afford to spend it and you don’t mind putting more money into the game, then fill your boots. But once the fun stops, or you do not have the disposable income to spend, then *AVOID SPENDING MONEY ON FIFA 20*.
FIFA 20 Ultime Tame guide: How else can you get players?
It isn’t just about packs. You can spend coins earned through winning games or selling players and items on the marketplace to buy players.
This is a much slower way of building your team, but much lighter on your wallet. Build your bank full of coins and then pick and choose which players will improve your team, building up to a squad that can take anyone on.
Of course, this is tricky when in-form players start to take over the market, and the truly high-quality players become more and more expensive.
This can easily spin out of control, but EA have recently added a super-useful new mini-game whereby you complete objectives using your library of players to unlock special cards.
For example, one week, you might be able to earn a special in-form card of Raheem Sterling by building a full team of English players with a minimum chemistry level of 82.
If you decide to trade that entire team in, that new Raheem Sterling card will be yours. This can be a great way of clearing out your Ultimate Team of players you’ll never use to get a player you actually will use.
There is also the new FUT Champions, which is basically a ranked league played over the weekend.
You’re tasked with winning a series of games within a two-day period. Depending on your results, you’ll be placed in a rank that will earn you packs, players and special rewards to help build your squad.
There are a myriad of ways to earn more players in your Ultimate Team now and improve your squad even faster.
There are also Season objectives which are individual and community challenges that have you winning Squad battles, Rivals or FUT Champions games to earn free packs.
Honestly, you wont be struggling to build your team.
FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Guide: Top tips to building your squad
Now you know what to expect going into FUT, lets talk about our top tips to helping you build the squad as fast as possible and get those Dubs.
Keep up the Chemistry
One of the more underrated aspects of maintaining a solid FIFA Ultimate Team is chemistry.
Chemistry is the connection your players have to each other, whether thats if they are from the same nation, play in the same league or even in the same team.
Building a team full of your favourite players is fun, but you need to fit the players into the complex puzzle to get the most out of them.
Players will have an individual chemistry rating based on the players who are around them and if they are in the right position.
So if you build a full squad of all Arsenal players in their correct positions in the formation they actually play in, all players will have the full 10/10 chemistry. This means their shots will be more accurate, passing and moving will be more fluid and the entire team will play together as a unit.
If you start putting strikers in goal, centre backs up front and Granit Xhaka on the left wing with players from other nations and leagues surrounding him, his performance will take a hit. So keep that all in mind.
Play around with the formation
Formation has grown more and more important in FIFA 20, to the point where the meta of the game is dictated almost entirely on where your players are positioned on the pitch.
FIFA 20 appears to be a bit more of a defensive, positioning game (though all FIFA games start out like that, so expect a change as the game progresses) so think about having a 3-4-3 or a 5-3-2 to pack as many players into your defensive line as possible.
Buy players intelligently
Cash is going to be thin on the ground at the beginning of your FIFA 20 UT career (unless you throw your wallet at the problem and buy FIFA Points) so you’re going to have to be a little patient in building the perfect dream team.
You won’t have the best players in the right positions, so you’re going to have to buy smart and incrementally build your team as you go.
You might not even have players from the right league or nation to build a full chemistry team for the first few games – they will all invariably be bronze players you have never heard of with one 90-rated Icon carrying you through the opening fixtures.
But you’re all about the small gains. You’re an intelligent, savvy player who can make cunning, cost-saving purchases to improve your team, right? RIGHT?
Do your research and pick players to buy on the market that are going to make an impact immediately.
Are you leaking goals because of a weak keeper? Invest in a more solid option to shore up the defence. Whipping balls into the box but not finishing your chances? Maybe look at buying a tall, powerful centre forward who can finish his dinner.
FIFA 20 is a game of inches, and when cash is tight, you need to make good decisions early on.
Take a break – don’t tilt
Trust us, we know the feeling – you’re knee-deep in a losing streak and you’re getting more and more frustrated. If its Weekend League on FUT Champions you DO NOT want to sacrifice losses.
Put down the controller and do something else. Go outside, make some food, or work out. Come back with a fresh mind and smash those opponents.
