Samuel L Jackson has opened up about Nick Fury’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spider-Man: Far From Home sees Fury operating in a world he doesn’t recognise, given that he was Snapped away for the five-year time jump that took place in Avengers: Endgame. As with Captain Marvel, it offers up a side to Fury that we haven’t seen before.
So Digital Spy wanted to ask Jackson whether he still feels there’s more to learn about Fury in the future.
“Of course there is. He’s gotta retool right now. As he says in this film, ‘I used to know everything and now I know nothing.’ Now we’ve gotta retool, figure out how the world has changed while he’s gone and who he can recruit and where he can recruit,” he explained.
Following the death of Tony Stark, Fury – along with newcomer Mysterio – takes on a sort-of mentor role for Peter Parker in Far From Home, even though he doesn’t know as much as he used to.
“That was always written into the role, but the way that Sam was able to shade it and give those layers of depth and complexity is fascinating,” director Jon Watts told Digital Spy.

And considering he’s been around since the start of the MCU, Watts just let Jackson do his thing.
“I’m just going to treat you like Nick Fury, you originated this character, you’ve played it so many times, you’ve been in the Marvel universe since the very beginning, I’m just gonna let Fury be Fury. And he said, ‘Finally someone gets it’,” he recalled.
