Disney’s live-action remake train shows no sign of slowing down, and it’s now cast a star to lead one of its biggest upcoming movies: The Little Mermaid.
Young actress Halle Bailey has been cast as the new Ariel.
The 19-year-old is known for acting in the show Grown-ish, but is possibly more recognisable as part of the duo Chloe x Halle with her sister.
They covered Beyoncé’s ‘Pretty Hurts’ in a viral video and were then invited to open for Bey and Jay themselves on the ‘On the Road II Tour’. Their debut album came out last year and featured them writing and/or producing on every track. That’s pretty amazing.
On a Chloe-related tangent, Chloe Grace Moretz was originally attached to the role of Ariel before she dropped out of all her film projects for a break in 2016.
Rob Marshall, who is directing the film after shooting Mary Poppins Returns for Disney, said: “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance – plus a glorious singing voice – all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”
(The best version of this song. Don’t @ us.)
Poppins star Lin-Manuel Miranda is on board to write new songs with Alan Menken for the remake, while 12-year-old Room star Jacob Tremblay, Crazy Rich Asians actress and comic Awkwafina, and Melissa McCarthy are all apparently lined up to star too.
