Disney’s Frozen star Idina Menzel has been tipped to join a huge movie from a studio rival – Sony’s adaptation of Cinderella.

That’s according to Deadline, who reports actress-singer Menzel is set to play Evelyn, the evil stepmother. Popstar Camila Cabello will play Cinderella.

An iconic Broadway star, Menzel originated the role of Maureen Johnson in Rent, and was also the first person to play Elphaba in Wicked. But of course, most will know her for being the voice of Elsa in Disney’s Frozen, the sequel to which is released in November.

This follows the news that Pose star Billy Porter is currently in negotiations to play the role of the Fairy Godmother.

Based on an original idea from James Corden, the new Cinderella movie is being written and directed by Kay Cannon, and it will mark Cabello’s feature film debut.

The former Fifth Harmony singer will also be involved in creating original music for the film, which is being described as a musical comedy about “an ambitious young woman whose dreams are bigger than the world will allow”.

This latest adaptation follows 2015’s live-action Disney update, starring Lily James as the princess, Bodyguard star Richard Madden as Prince Charming and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother.

Cinderella is set to be released on February 5, 2021.
