Hollywood just loves to reboot properties that ’80s and ’90s kids have a fond nostalgia for – and loves to cast stars from critically-acclaimed ‘cool’ shows/films in them to try and make some sweet, sweet dollar.
Case in point: Paramount is looking to sign up Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding for its third attempt at a GI Joe live-action movie.
According to TheWrap, the studio is in talks with the Nick Young actor as fan-favourite character Snake Eyes, ie: the one who dresses in all black (and maybe sometimes in very dark grey).
The movie will explore the character’s long and complicated backstory, which involves the *checks notes* Arashikage, but all you really need to know is he is a ninja and ninjas are cool.
He was played in the first two movies by Ray Park, the guy behind all of Star Wars baddie Darth Maul’s kicks and flips, which makes him even more cool.
The GI Joe reboot will be directed by Robert Schwentke, who was behind RED (which was very good) and R.I.P.D. (which was not), while the script was written by the Beauty and the Beast remake’s screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos.
