Chris Hemsworth has admitted that he “enjoyed the transformation” into Avengers: Endgame‘s rather portly version of Thor.
It’s not a spoiler to say that the God of Thunder packs on the pounds during Marvel Studios’ record-breaking movie, with Thor putting on weight and growing a long beard during the five-year time jump.
After all, who wouldn’t comfort eat after Thanos snapped away half of all living things in the universe (and you blamed yourself for it happening in the first place)?
Chatting to Australia’s The Daily Telegraph recently, the star was asked about what it was like to film as the new version of Thor for Endgame.
“I had weights on my wrist and my ankles to make me move differently, but I enjoyed the transformation and freedom to do whatever I wanted with the character,” he explained.
“Especially playing him again and again, you get locked into certain expectations. That kind of broke the mould completely and allowed me to swing for the fences.”
He also called the experience of wearing a giant prosthetic belly on set as a “very strange day at work”.
“It weighed around 40kg so it was very heavy,” he added. “It’s a silicon sort of prosthetic suit with a zip at the back, and at any moment people would come up and rub my stomach.
“I know how my wife feels now when she was pregnant!”

Hemsworth also recently revealed that while the original plan was to turn Thor back into the God we were first introduced to by the end of the film, he fought to keep the new version of the character.
“I enjoyed that version of Thor,” he said. “It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own.”
Avengers: Endgame is out now.
