Just when you thought you’d heard it all, a story such as this comes along, and life as you know it no longer makes sense. (Us? Dramatic? Never.)

In news we didn’t quite expect, former Disney Channel star Bella Thorne has directed a porn film – but only because her original plan to direct a Christmas-themed horror movie fell through.

Bella, who also starred in that Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, directed the porn film as part of Pornhub’s Visionaries Director’s Series – an initiative which showcases debut projects in a bid to diversify porn content.

Her & Him depicts an “edgy 20-something guy who stumbles upon a surprise text in his girlfriend’s phone” that upends not only their “morning routine” but their entire sexual relationship.

Bella has called Her & Him “a beautiful, ethereal film”, admitting in a behind-the-scenes feature that she feels “really lucky” to have made the film in collaboration with Pornhub.

“Originally I was shopping it around a very long time ago and things were very different,” referring to her original idea for a festive scare-fest. “People are kind of scared to make a movie like this one when it comes to dominance and submissive[ness] between a male and a female and how this relationship can turn quite sour.”

Pornhub’s vice president went on to call Bella’s directorial debut “a modernistic, sexually explicit Romeo and Juliet-like depiction of two star-crossed lovers who have an unbridled sexual longing for each other” – so yeah, this is very different to Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.

Bella Thorne has always spoken candidly about sex and sexuality, recently coming out as pansexual after first identifying as bisexual.

In an interview, Bella talked about her attraction to “beings” and “personality” rather than someone with a particular gender identity.

“I’m actually a pansexual, and I didn’t know that. Somebody explained to me really thoroughly what that is. You like beings, you like what you like,” she explained. “Doesn’t have to be a girl or a guy, or… you know, a he, a she, a they, or this or that.

“It’s literally, you like personality, like you just like a being. It doesn’t really matter what’s going on, over there. If I just like it, I like it!”
