More than two decades after the first Scream film was released, the horror franchise is now reportedly working on a new instalment.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Spyglass Media Group is currently developing the fifth film in the slasher series, although it’s currently unknown what form it will take following the death of its creator Wes Craven in 2015.

Craven directed all four of the previous Scream films, but various other filmmakers came on board to direct episodes of the TV series that ran for two seasons on MTV and one on VH1.

It’s unclear if the fifth instalment will exist in the same universe as the first four movies, but Bloody Disgusting reports that, at the time of writing, Craven’s Scream co-creator Kevin Williamson won’t be penning the screenplay.

The previous films have featured recurring characters played by the likes of David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Friends star Courteney Cox – but it’s also unknown if any of these actors will be reprising their old roles.

Back in 2013, Campbell, who starred in all three sequels, told Collider that she didn’t think a fifth film would be made.

“I’m not sure they’re going to make it, to be honest,” she said. “If that were to come up again and they were to approach me, I’d have a chat with them about it.”

No doubt more news about Scream 5 – if we can call it that – will emerge in due course.
