The most recent Mission: Impossible movie featured Man vs Steel‘s Henry Cavill (and his now-infamous moustache) as the villain, so it only makes sense to get a Marvel Cinematic Universe star involved for the next instalment.
And it looks like Agent Carter‘s Hayley Atwell has answered the call as the actress has confirmed she’ll be joining Tom Cruise in the franchise – although her exact role is understandably being kept top secret at the moment.
M:I7‘s writer and director Christopher McQuarrie first teased the casting on his Instagram page, sharing a black and white photo of the actress’ headshot and writing: “@wellhayley Should you choose to accept…”
The actress replied with her own message on Instagram, sharing the same photograph as McQuarrie across nine photos to take over her grid.
“@christophermcquarrie Mission: Accepted. Though I’m not the sort to follow orders…” the caption on each photo read.
What do we think here, kids? Is Atwell just being cheeky, or is she teasing the nature of her character? Our money’s on the latter, and we can’t wait to see Atwell get involved with Tom Cruise’s “world-topping” big ideas for the film.

The star recently said that she thinks she is done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is happy and “fulfilled” with everything she has done with the character of Peggy Carter.
Despite that, Atwell is returning to play Peggy one more time in a story that will see the British agent step up to the plate and become the new Captain America for Marvel’s upcoming What If…? animated series for Disney+.
Mission: Impossible 7 is currently due for a release on July 23, 2021, while an eighth film has already been pencilled in for a release on August 5, 2022.
