In two social media posts he later deleted, the 28-year-old – who was previously considered for the role of Ariel’s love interest – accused the studio of making “boring” choices when it comes to its line-ups.
“Literally @disney saw a who’s who list of actors of color and STILL went with the white guy,” he wrote in an impassioned caption alongside a photo of Hauer-King, which was screen-grabbed by a fan before it was removed.
“So much for diversity,” Navarro continued. “I guess two brown leads would have tanked the movie, right? Boring.”
On Twitter, he doubled down on his earlier comments, saying: “Just came back to say; after months of seeing every person of color they could think of for the role of Prince Eric, @DisneyStudios somehow still cast a white guy.
“I guess diversity is just a word. And THATS Hollywood. One brown person is enough, two brown leads is unthinkable.”
Back in July, it was announced that A Wrinkle in Time actor Halle Bailey will play the titular character in the upcoming retelling of the 1989 animation.
She and Hauer-King will be joined onscreen by Can You Ever Forgive Me? star Melissa McCarthy – who is set to portray Ursula – and Daveed Diggs, who will lend his voice to crab Sebastian.
It has also been reported that Javier Bardem is in talks to play Ariel’s father King Triton.
Navarro’s rep did not respond to Digital Spy‘s request for comment.
